Expired vs new: buy the letters, not the age

This URL still asks which is better for fast SEO ranking: expired or new. Keep it. Neither is a coupon. Drop catching is just racing to re-register a name that fell out of the lifecycle. ICANN’s redemption grace exists so the previous owner can still rescue it, not so you can inherit PageRank. Wikipedia’s note on domain speculation is the honest sport: you are betting on letters people might want.

I’m Mostapha. I buy and sell names from Morocco. I have paid extra for “aged” and won a past I did not want. Run the Domain Value Checker as if both names were new. If the expired one only wins because of age, you are buying a story. FAQ. How to value a drop as a name: expired valuation. Not as a link bag: don’t buy it for the links.

What “expired” actually adds

A history. Sometimes useful (a real company, clean snapshots). Often a warning (spam, trademarks, a farm of URLs). Audit it: history. A new registration on a good string is empty and cheap to understand. An expired leftover is expensive to misunderstand. Age does not reprice hyphens. DR does not either: DR is not a price.

Do not 301 the old URL city onto a cleaner name you already own: don’t bring the junk. A new coat of paint does not launder a dirty drop: a new site does not launder an old domain.

A fair comparison

Put both strings through the same order: checker, radio test, trademarks (WIPO UDRP), then comps. Valuation habit: a range, not a guarantee. If the new name is sayable and the expired name is a stuffed phrase with a “DR 35,” the new name wins. If the expired name is the exact string you would have registered tomorrow, the drop is a discount — still not an SEO cheat. Hidden-treasure lists are the other factory page; we will strip that next.

Bid only with a ceiling: before you buy. Theme-chasing drops (“AI 2026 aged”) are the niche-list mistake: there is no secret niche list.

Expired vs new

Decision

  1. Ignore “better for ranking.” That question is how leftovers get a premium.
  2. Score the letters. Then, if expired, pay for history work or walk.
  3. Buy the name you would want with the age column hidden.

Keep the Google row. Fast SEO ranking was the old bait. The valuation job is the same for used and new: the string, then the risk.
