This URL still sells “repurposing expired domains” as a link ledger. Keep the address. ICANN’s own picture of a name’s life is a registration cycle, the gTLD lifecycle, plus expired-registration recovery. Nowhere in that cycle is “inherit the backlink graph and rank.” A drop is a chance to buy letters. Treating it as a bag of links is how you overpay for poison.

Links on a corpse
Most “equity” on a drop is leftover from a site that died, was spam, or was built to be sold to people like the old version of this article. Inherited links are a warning more often than a bonus: not a second appraisal. Check blocklists before you romanticise the graph: Spamhaus Domain Check and look at snapshots. A rebuild does not launder them: a new site does not launder an old domain.
Do not 301 the dead host’s thousands of paths to a cleaner name you already own. That is importing the farm: don’t bring the junk URLs. History first: the audit.
When an expired name is still a buy
The letters would be worth registering tomorrow with no links at all: length, extension, brand, a buyer you can name. Then the drop is a discount on the string, not a PBN kit. Bid with a ceiling from the checker’s wholesale neighborhood, not from “this DR sold once.” Before you buy.

- Checker as if links were zero. Fail → do not bid.
- Spamhaus + history + trademark. Any frown → do not bid.
- Pass → you are buying a name on the drop calendar, not a link spreadsheet. Do not migrate the old URL city with it.
Keep the Google row. The ledger that belongs here now is: letters, then risk, then maybe a host. Links last, and usually never.
