Managed WordPress is not a reason to keep a domain

Managed WordPress is a product: someone else patches the CMS and takes a monthly fee. WordPress.org is still free software. Neither of those facts makes a leftover domain more valuable. The invoice can outlive the name’s chances of a sale.

This URL used to compare managed hosts. It stays. I’m Mostapha; I buy and sell names from Morocco. I have paid “carefree WordPress” on strings I should have dropped. Run the Domain Value Checker before you renew a hosting plan. If the letters are weak, the plan is a donation. FAQ.

What you are actually buying

A managed plan is labour and a server, not equity in the domain. Confirm who owns the name with ICANN Lookup. If Lookup shows you but the host “owns” the billing and the nameservers, you have an operational dependency, not a stronger asset. Keep registrar and host as separate companies. Lock at the registrar: domain security.

HTTPS on a lander does not require a managed stack. A certificate from Let’s Encrypt on a static page is enough for “for sale.” Buyers comparing sold names on DNJournal are not filtering for which WordPress host you used.

When managed WP is reasonable

You operate a real publication or shop on a name you will keep for years, you want someone else to patch PHP, and you can still export files. Then pick boring: backups you can download, no hostage nameservers, an invoice you will notice. Still build on a copy, not on the public hostname; don’t test on the domain you might sell.

If the plan is “I’ll flip it after I grow DA on managed WP,” stop. That is a site business plus a hope. The name still has to stand alone in the checker. Extra CMS work on a weak string is how portfolios fill with renewals.

When to cancel

  • Checker says leftover-hyphen-stuffing.
  • You have not logged into WordPress in months except to pay.
  • The host will not give you a simple DNS-only or static option, so you keep PHP “just in case.”

Put a lander or parking back. The name can still sell. The CMS does not have to come along the same split as transfer vs site move. Price the letters: before you sell.

Decision

  1. Score the name. Weak: cancel managed WordPress this cycle.
  2. Strong, for sale: static lander, not a patched CMS.
  3. Strong, actually publishing: then managed WP is a tool registrar still separate, DNS still boring.

This Google row used to be a hosting tips list. Keep the URL. The investor tip is: do not rent a nanny for WordPress to avoid deciding whether the domain deserves another year.
